What are wall lights used for? Wall lights serve both a practical and decorative purpose. They're brilliant for adding layers of light to a room, creating atmosphere without the harshness of overhead lighting alone. They work especially well in hallways, living rooms, bedrooms and commercial spaces like bars and restaurants.
What's the difference between a wall light and a wall sconce? The two terms are often used interchangeably, but traditionally a sconce refers to a wall-mounted fitting with a shade or decorative element that directs light upwards or outwards. In everyday use, most people use "wall light" and "wall sconce" to mean the same thing.
How high should wall lights be positioned? As a general guide, wall lights look best when mounted at around 150–170cm from the floor roughly eye level when standing. That said, it does depend on the room and the effect you're going for. In a bedroom, for example, you might want them lower if they're being used as bedside reading lights.
Do Old School Electric wall lights work outdoors? Some of our wall lights are suitable for outdoor use, but you'll need to check the IP rating of the specific fitting before installing it outside. For outdoor use, we'd recommend a minimum IP44 rating to ensure the fitting is protected against the elements.
Are your wall lights suitable for bathrooms? Yes we offer IP44 rated wall lights that are designed to be bathroom safe. IP44 rated fittings provide protection against splashing water, making them perfectly suitable for use in bathroom zones where a standard wall light wouldn't be appropriate. We'd always recommend having them installed by a qualified electrician.
What bulb fitting do wall lights use? The majority of our wall lights use a standard ES (E27) or SES (E14) screw-fit bulb. For the full industrial effect, we love pairing them with a warm Edison filament bulb it really brings out the character of the fitting.
Do I need an electrician to install a wall light? If you're replacing an existing wall light on a circuit that's already in place, a competent DIYer can usually manage the swap. However, if new wiring is needed for example, chasing cables into a wall this must be carried out by a qualified electrician in line with Part P of the Building Regulations here in the UK.
Are Old School Electric wall lights suitable for pubs, bars and restaurants? Absolutely. Our industrial wall lights are a firm favourite in the hospitality industry. They're robust, full of character and create exactly the kind of warm, inviting atmosphere that keeps customers coming back. We work with commercial clients across the UK, so don't hesitate to get in touch if you're fitting out a venue.
