Getting your bathroom lighting right makes all the difference. It's one of those rooms where you need light that's practical enough for the morning routine but atmospheric enough to help you properly unwind at the end of a long day. At Old School Electric, we think there's no reason why bathroom lighting can't be beautiful as well as functional.
Our British designed bathroom lighting collection brings that signature industrial character into a space that's all too often overlooked when it comes to interior design. Every fitting in this collection carries an IP44 rating as a minimum, meaning they're built to handle the steam, splashes and humidity that come with the territory in a bathroom environment.
From pendant lights to wall lights, we've got options that work just as hard as they look good. Whether you're renovating a family bathroom, a sleek en suite or a boutique hotel bathroom, browse the collection below and find something that makes your bathroom feel a little more special.
What lighting is safe to use in a bathroom? Bathrooms in the UK are divided into zones based on their proximity to water. Each zone has a minimum IP (Ingress Protection) rating requirement. All of our bathroom lighting carries at least an IP44 rating, which means the fittings are protected against water splashes from any direction, making them safe for use in the appropriate bathroom zones.
What does IP44 mean? IP44 is a safety rating that tells you how well protected a fitting is against solid particles and water. The first number (4) means it's protected against objects larger than 1mm, and the second number (4) means it can handle water splashes from any direction. For most bathroom zones, IP44 is the minimum standard you should be looking for.
Can I use pendant lights in a bathroom? Yes you can, and they look absolutely stunning in the right bathroom. Our IP44 rated pendant lights are designed specifically for use in bathrooms, bringing that industrial character into a space where you might not expect to find it. Always have them installed by a qualified electrician to make sure everything meets current regulations.
Where should bathroom lights be positioned? Good bathroom lighting usually works in layers. Overhead lighting provides general illumination while wall lights positioned either side of a mirror give you the most flattering and practical light for everyday tasks like applying makeup or shaving. Avoid placing a single light directly above a mirror as it tends to cast unflattering shadows.
Do I need an electrician to fit bathroom lighting? Yes, in most cases you will. Bathroom electrics are classified as a special location under UK wiring regulations, which means the work needs to be carried out by a qualified electrician. This isn't just a recommendation, it's a legal requirement in the UK and your electrician will be able to certify the work once it's complete.
Can I use Old School Electric bathroom lights in a shower room? As long as the fitting carries the correct IP rating for the zone it's being installed in, absolutely. All of our bathroom lights meet at least IP44 as a minimum. If you're unsure which rating you need for a specific area of your bathroom or shower room, a qualified electrician will be able to advise you before you purchase.
Are your bathroom lights suitable for commercial use? Very much so. Our industrial bathroom lights are popular in hotels, restaurants, bars and other hospitality venues across the UK. If you're fitting out a commercial space and need something with real character that also meets safety requirements, take a look at the collection or get in touch and we'll be happy to help.
