What is pendant lighting? A pendant light is a single light fixture that hangs from the ceiling, usually suspended by a cord, cable or chain. They're one of the most versatile lighting options around — equally at home above a dining table, a kitchen worktop or a bar counter.

What's the difference between a pendant light and a hanging light? Honestly, not much! The terms are used interchangeably. "Pendant" tends to be the more widely used term in the industry, but they refer to the same style of ceiling-hung light fixture.

How low should a pendant light hang? As a general rule, pendant lights over a dining table or kitchen island should hang around 70–80cm above the surface. For open spaces or hallways, the bottom of the fitting should sit at least 210cm from the floor to avoid any accidental head bumps.

What bulb do I need for an industrial pendant light? Most of our pendant lights are compatible with standard ES (E27) or SES (E14) screw-fit bulbs. For that classic industrial look, an exposed Edison filament bulb works a treat — warm, atmospheric and full of character.

Are Old School Electric pendant lights suitable for commercial use? Absolutely. Our industrial-style pendants are a popular choice for restaurants, bars, cafés and retail spaces across the UK. They're designed to make an impression and built to handle the demands of a busy environment.

Do I need an electrician to fit a pendant light? In the UK, replacing a like-for-like light fitting is generally considered a straightforward job that a competent DIYer can handle. However, any new wiring or circuit work must be carried out by a qualified electrician in line with Part P of the Building Regulations.

Can I use pendant lights in a bathroom? Yes — and we've got you covered. Old School Electric offer IP44 rated pendant lights that are specifically designed to be bathroom safe. IP44 rated fittings are protected against splashing water, making them suitable for use in bathroom zones where a standard pendant simply wouldn't be appropriate. As always, we'd recommend having your new light fitted by a qualified electrician to make sure everything is installed safely and up to code.
