Handcrafted in northern Ghana by master weavers of The Baba Tree, the PET Lamp Gurunsi Light takes its name and form from the Gurunsi architecture of the region. This style of building, found in Frafra family compounds, uses curved adobe walls and natural timber to create flowing, organic forms. Each lamp reflects this architectural heritage in both its volume and surface detail, with every curve and junction of the weave offering a reference to the handmade, earth-formed homes of the region.
The lamp is made using a mix of recycled PET bottles and Veta Vera grass (commonly known as Elephant grass), dyed and woven by hand using traditional techniques passed down through generations. The artisans interpret architectural forms and decorative patterns freely, giving each lamp a unique finish and shape. These are designed to fold flat for shipping, then open into their final form on-site, retaining the integrity of the weave through clever structural design. The weave itself is left partially open, casting soft patterned shadows when illuminated.
